Today would see us cross over into the Lone Star state. It would be a sort visit of only one night though. With a journey of only around 177 mile (284km) we had a lot planned to do. As the motel at Clinton didn’t do any breakfast options we hit the road early.
Our stops would include:
We were in for another warm day, with little to keep us from getting on the road we packed and hit the road just after the sun was up. Our direction was southward to get onto the original alignment and then head west towards Texas.
Arriving at Elk City we were far too early for the National Route 66 Museum & Old Towns Museums to be open. A stop to wander the grounds and get some photos and we were on the road again.
From Elk City we followed the old Route 66 alignment as much as possible with our next stop being the Texas border at Texola.
A couple of great photo opportunities here with the One – Cell Jailhouse, Texola in Oklahoma and the Texas border sign.
Back on the road our next stop was the restored Magnolia Gas Station at Shamrock. Then we ventured on to McLean and a visit to the Devil’s Rope Museum.
We first thought a museum about barbed wire would be lame, to our surprise it was very interesting and highlighted barber wire history. As well as the settlement of the area by farmers.
Not far from the Devil’s Rope Museum is the restored Phillips 66 Service Station. Another great photo opportunity for and Route 66 travellers.
With our day already 1/2 done we continued our adventure with a stops at the Alanreed Abandoned Gas Station, Leaning Tower of Texas and the Big Cross at Groom, the VW Slug Bug Ranch, and a lunch stop at Coyote Bluff Café , Amarillo.
The claim to fame for me at least regarding Coyote Bluff Cafe is it was on the first episode on Man versus Food.
After trying Coyote Bluff’s ‘Burger from Hell” I found it wasn’t that hot. Maybe the years of rating chilli made me immune to its heat.
It was a short trip to the Red Roof Inn, after checking in we wanted to do some washing the staff were rather unhelpful and rude. Once our washing was sorted it was a short walk to Tripp’s Harley-Davidson for a look around and some shopping.
Once evening arrived we got the free limousine to and from the Big Texan Steak Ranch for dinner. Our trip through Texas would be short tomorrow would see us pass into New Mexico.
