We were heading to Watsons Bay this morning to check out the Hornby Lighthouse. The lighthouse was built in 1858 following the wrecking of the Dunbar at the foot of South Head. Designed by colonial architect Alexander Dawson, Hornby Lighthouse was the third lighthouse to be built in NSW. Hornby Lighthouse is accessible via the South Head heritage trail an easy walk that leaves from Camp Cove at Watsons Bay, taking you past historic gun emplacements before reaching Hornby Lighthouse.
Not being familiar with Sydney we weren’t sure what CCWB ferry was. As we found out it is Captain Cook Watsons Bay. A ferry service run by a private company. Fortunately they also use the NSW government Opal Card for travel. Once we disembarked the ferry we made our way to Camp Cove cafe for a coffee and lamb sausage roll. The sausage roll was a bit different from what we’d normally consider for a sausage roll. The view is amazing, and the cafe is well worth a visit just to enjoy a coffee and look back towards the Sydney CBD.
I was really looking forward to seeing the lighthouse in all of its read and white painted glory. Only to find it is undergoing renovations. Needless to say the view from South Head is still spectacular. Once we’d finished taking photos and video we got the CCWB ferry back to Circular Quay. We then ventured to Customs House to check out the 3d map Circular Quay and its surrounds.
From there we headed back to the room to plan our next move. I wanted to check out HobbyCo in the QVB, so a quick train ride to Town Hall seen us arrive. After buying some model kits it was time for more refreshments and a spot of lunch at the Duke of Clarence Hotel.
The Duke of Clarence Hotel is a little unusual in as much as you access it via a laneway passing rubbish bins from other businesses. Hidden in the Sydney CBD, it is an 18th-Century inspired London Tavern.
Being well sated with both beers and food we decided to walk back to The Rocks, a journey of about 1.3km. A stop at Harts Pub for a beer and quick rest seen us get back to the motel for a short rest before further adventures.
We were a bit undecided on our dinner plans and decided to have a pizza at Zina Pizzeria. Once we arrived I changed my mind and had the sapg bol and Janelle has the Minestrone Soup and for dessert we had an Avogatto coffee. By this time we were feeling a little weary after 2 dance s of walking around sight seeing. So a short walk to the bridge access near the Glenmore Hotel seen us capture our final photos of vivid Sydney. Tomorrow would see us back on the road again.
