With our journey to Monument Valley done it was time to turn around and head back towards Route 66. Riding back through Monument Valley with the sun behind us was a truly majestic experience. You can certainly see why it’s one of the most photographed places on the planet. If I was to venture this way again I’d try and stay at Mexican Hat, it’s closer to Monument Valley and it’s also on the San Juan river.
The destination for today is Williams, AZ. a ride of 421 km (261miles) I wound the throttle open once we departed Monument Valley so we made great time. We also ‘lost’ an hour coming back into Arizona. We called into Grand Canyon Harley-Davidson at Bellmont on the way through. More shirts that we probably don’t need.
Our motel for the night was the Highlander Motel located on old Route 66. It was originally built in the 1950. Only a short walk to restaurant’s, gift shops, and local drinking venues.
After we checked in we chatted to our neighbours for the night who were also touring on a Harley-Davidson. They gave me a Tampa Harley-Davidson t-shirt so I gave them a Rockhampton Harley-Davidson t-shirt. After a bit of a chat Mrs. Thirsty and I ventured off for some food and cold beers.
Our first stop was the Cruiser’s Cafe 66. The deconstructed burger was just plain weird. From there is was on to Station 66 for a lazy afternoon watching the world go by from the upstairs patio area chilling with some cold beers and later on a pizza for dinner.
As darkness fell there were some cool neon and lit up signage on the way back to the motel.
Tomorrow we head to Las Vegas.
