The Cowra Prisoner of War Camp site is listed as one of the top Heritage sites in NSW. In 1944 over 1000 Japanese POW staged a mass breakout that was the biggest in British and Australian War History. 231 Japanese POW lost their lives and 4 Australians also died during the breakout.
We had previously visited the sits back in 2006 and a lot of work has been done since them to commemorate the breakout and the prison site itself. It is a little sobering to look at it and reflect on the loss of life from the breakout.
The prison camp was located on the corner of Evans Street and Sakura Avenue, Cowra 2794.
