The Rocks, Sydney β One of Our Favourite Places to Get Thirsty!
There are plenty of places in Australia worth visiting, but The Rocks in Sydney is definitely one of our favourites! With Circular Quay, the iconic Harbour Bridge, the Opera House and enough pubs to keep a couple of thirsty tourists occupied, what’s not to love? π»
It’s the sort of place where you can spend a few days doing a bit of sightseeing, enjoying the harbour views and, of course, putting in some serious research at the local drinking establishments. Someone has to do it!
Where We Stay
When we visit The Rocks, our usual home away from home is The Rendezvous at The Rocks.
There’s accommodation in the main complex, along with the Historic Terraces in the neighbouring houses, accessed through the motel lobby. It’s a great location for exploring the area without having to worry too much about transport.
Of course, being so close to all the action does have one downside. There are far too many tempting places to stop for a cold beverage!
Places to Have a Drink or a Feed
Now we’re getting to the important stuff! The Rocks has plenty of character, history and excellent watering holes. Here are a few of our favourites that are worth checking out.
Munich Brauhaus β For when a little German hospitality and a rather substantial beer are calling your name. Those one-litre beer glasses certainly know how to make an impression!
Lord Nelson Brewery Hotel β A historic pub with its own brewery. Fresh beer and old-world charm make this one well worth a visit.
The Glenmore at The Rocks β Head upstairs for the rooftop views. The harbour scenery is spectacular, and the beer tastes pretty good up there too!
The Harbour View Hotel β Another classic pub to add to your Rocks adventure.
Harts Pub β A favourite for craft beer lovers, with plenty of options to keep the taste buds entertained.
The Hero of Waterloo Hotel β A long-time favourite of ours, full of history and old-school pub character. We never seem to tire of calling in here.
Naturally, this list is by no means exhaustive. There are plenty more establishments around the area, and we’re always happy to investigate further. It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it!
Stretching the Legs Between Pubs
Believe it or not, we do occasionally leave the pubs and venture out to see some of Sydney’s sights!
We love wandering around the area, and many attractions are within walking distance, including:
Darling Harbour β Plenty to see along the waterfront, with cafes, restaurants and attractions to explore.
The Royal Botanic Garden β A beautiful spot for a wander and a break from the hustle and bustle of the city.
The Sydney Opera House β One of Australia’s most recognisable landmarks and always worth another look.
Circular Quay and the Harbour Bridge β Fantastic views, plenty of photo opportunities and a reminder of just how good Sydney Harbour really is.
The best part is that you can spend the day exploring, take in the sights and then wander back towards The Rocks for a well-earned refreshment. Our kind of exercise!
Why We Keep Coming Back
Let’s be honest, The Rocks isn’t the cheapest place to stay, but there’s something special about the area that keeps drawing us back.
The history, the harbour, the atmosphere, the pubs and the ability to leave the car behind and explore on foot all make it a fantastic place to spend a few days.
We’ve visited numerous times and still manage to find something new to see, somewhere different to eat or another pub that deserves a closer inspection.
And with so many great watering holes within walking distance, it’s easy to understand why The Rocks remains one of our favourite Australian destinations.
After all, sightseeing is thirsty work, and The Thirsty Tourists are always happy to do their bit to support the local hospitality industry! π»
