Another Thirsty Tourists favourite!

Some places just keep finding their way onto our touring itinerary, and the Clock and Bull Brewhouse at Cabarlah is definitely one of them.

It’s become one of our reliable lunch stops, and there’s a distinct possibility that the Black Forest Stout has something to do with my continued enthusiasm for returning. 😂

The Clock & Bull Brewhouse at Cabarlah has quite a fascinating history, and the site has been part of the local community for well over 150 years.

A little history behind the Clock & Bull

The site at 9917 New England Highway was originally home to the Farmers Arms Hotel, also known as Wilke’s Hotel. According to family history, William Wilkes arrived at the property on 1 March 1866 and purchased the land.

The Farmers Arms operated from this site from 1876 until 1902, when the buildings were destroyed by fire. The hotel was subsequently rebuilt a little further north, where the Farmers Arms still stands today.

The site later became associated with the Black Forest Hill Cuckoo Clock Shop, which opened in 1990. The distinctive German-themed clock centre became a familiar landmark for travellers passing through Cabarlah, showcasing traditional German clockmaking craftsmanship.

In 2023, plans were approved to adapt the former clock centre into a microbrewery, restaurant and shop. The Clock & Bull Brewhouse opened in 2024, with owners Damien and Marena Matthews bringing their long-held dream of creating a destination venue in their home region to life.

So, when you visit today, you’re not just stepping into a modern venue. You’re visiting a site that has seen Cabarlah’s early hotel days, a much-loved cuckoo clock shop and now a new chapter as a restaurant and brewhouse.

That’s quite a few changes of occupation for one spot over 150 years!
